When it comes to packaging tape, everyone is likely familiar with it. It can be seen in classrooms, on parcel packaging, event decorations, and so on. But do you know the materials that make up packaging tape? Let's take a look together through the lens of the packaging industry chain exhibition.
The packaging industry chain exhibition has revealed that the main features of packaging tape include thin thickness, good performance-to-price ratio, transparent appearance, double-sided adhesiveness, non-toxicity, odorless, good safety, easy to use, high efficiency, high anti-shock strength, good shrinkage rate, anti-puncture, and anti-tear performance. The features of packaging tape largely depend on its material.

The common materials for packaging tape we see are BOPP, PE, and PVC:
The packaging industry chain exhibition has noted that BOPP is primarily used to make packaging tape and transparent tape. The clear packaging tape made from BOPP material has high strength, good transparency, good barrier properties against oxygen and nitrogen, low-temperature resistance, and low specific gravity, which are well-received by many users. BOPP packaging tape uses BOPP bi-axially oriented polypropylene film as its base material. After being evenly coated with pressure-sensitive adhesive emulsion under heat, it forms an adhesive layer ranging from 8μm to 28μm in thickness, creating the BOPP tape jumbo roll. This material is indispensable in light industrial enterprises, companies, and personal life. Currently, there is no comprehensive national standard for the tape industry, only an industry standard for BOPP pressure-sensitive adhesive tape used for packaging.
After high-voltage corona treatment on the BOPP base film, one side of the surface becomes rough. Then, adhesive is applied to it to form the tape jumbo roll, which is then slit into smaller rolls of various specifications using a slitting machine. These are the tapes we use daily. The main component of the pressure-sensitive adhesive emulsion is butyl acrylate.
By using different types and concentrations of catalysts, changing the composition ratio of the catalyst, and the polymerization temperature, high-density polyethylene (PE) resin with different properties can be produced. Additionally, according to user needs, different plastic additives can be added during the post-treatment process to produce granules for various purposes.
The packaging industry chain exhibition has noted that polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is one of the five general-purpose plastics. Its production volume currently ranks second in the world, just after polyethylene. PVC resin has relatively strong polarity and plasticity. It has good processing performance and can produce a wide range of products from rigid to flexible. Due to its good mechanical properties, chemical resistance, corrosion resistance, and flame retardancy, it can be widely used in plastic pipes, plastic windows and doors, wood-like plastics, sheets, films, artificial leather, electrical wires and cables, and packaging materials. It is a low-energy, low-cost, and widely-used plastic, which is why it continues to develop rapidly in various countries.
